Be part of the Crowther Centre community

The Church Mission Society (CMS) seeks to be a community of mission service, a movement of people in mission obeying the call of God to proclaim the gospel in all places and to draw all peoples into fellowship in Christ.

Members of the community of CMS seek to
  • embody a mission lifestyle of ‘loving God’s world, living God’s way’, in different contexts and communities
  • equip people in mission service, through global networks, for the transformation of individuals and societies
  • share resources for mission on the basis of shared vision and values
The Crowther Centre for Mission Education has developed three programmes aiming at this sharing of mission vision and resources in the global church.

Missiologist in Residence

This post is offered on a short-term basis (3–9 months) and has a two-fold purpose. The primary responsibility is to assist CMS – its mission personnel, staff, trustees and mission networks to reflect missiologically on their ministry and work. Secondly, this post can be used as a sabbatical, since there will be some opportunity for writing, research and student contact.

The Crowther Centre offers:

  • access to the CMS library and the Bodleian library of Oxford University
  • desks with computer and internet access in the Crowther Centre
  • housing: room and board in the CMS Mission House community in Oxford
  • small honorarium

The Missiologist in Residence:

  • is a missiologist/mission practitioner from the majority world
  • has a graduate degree in missiology
  • has experience in cross-cultural relationships
  • has experience in ecumenical relationships
  • has an understanding of the work of mission societies
  • has a good standard of spoken and written English
  • has good writing skills

Scholar in Residence

Scholars and mission practitioners who would like to do missiological research are invited to use the Crowther Centre library and to be part of the Crowther Centre community for an agreed period of time. The Crowther Centre can offer them access to the Bodleian library of Oxford University and a desk with computer and internet access in the Crowther Centre library.

The Scholar in Residence will have to find his or her own accommodation and funding. The Crowther Centre will also ask them to share their research and experience through publication and/or presentation.

Visiting Student

This programme is developed in partnership with Wycliffe Hall and Regent’s Park College, both Permanent Private Halls of Oxford University. The goal is to support leadership development and missiological reflection.

It will give postgraduate students, mainly from the majority world, an opportunity of exposure to theological training in another culture, as well as an exchange with local and international students.

For the duration of one academic term (approx.10 weeks), the student will be integrated into the student community of one of the colleges, receive academic support, access to the university libraries and accommodation with full dining rights. The Crowther Centre will cover the academic fees, cost of travel and accommodation.

The Crowther Centre will also ask the student to interact with CMS on different levels and to share his or her research and experience through publication and presentation.
