Let peace prevail
Southern Sudan's journey to independence
In January 2011 the people of Southern Sudan decided to secede from the North and form an independent country.
South Sudan became an independent nation on 9 July.
The Episcopal Church of Sudan and other CMS partners are working hard to promote peace in this transition period. The message is simple and stark: "We do not want to go back to war."
The Episcopal Church has announced its intention to remain one church across the north and south, to support the Christian minority in the north.
Please join us in standing our brothers and sisters in Sudan and crying out to God, "Let peace prevail."

Prayer for the New Nation of South Sudan
by the Rt Rev Anthony Poggo, Bishop of the Diocese of Kajo-Keji, Sudan
Almighty God, we thank you for the new nation of the Republic of South Sudan.
We pray for its political leaders that they will be united and serve the people with all diligence and put the nation first. Give them your wisdom as they lead the people of South Sudan.
We pray that religious leaders will guide and speak a prophetic message of hope, peace and reconciliation to the new nation of South Sudan.
Purge the new nation of all corrupt practices and instill to the people and leaders a fear of God and the culture of hard work.
We pray for those who have taken up arms that they will agree to peace and resolve all grievances through peaceful means.
We pray that South Sudan will have peace with all its neighbours.
We pray this through Jesus our Lord. Amen

“Please pray for the people of the Nuba Mountains in Southern Kordofan, where catastrophe looms in a humanitarian crisis largely unseen as the government refuses access to aid agencies. It is estimated that at least 230,000 among the 1.2 million war-affected Nuba people are displaced without food. Only 140,000 of these have received any relief – and that was only a one-week ration form local stocks that are now exhausted. The problem is political, and much prayer is needed to bring he desire and the means for peace.”
