An outspoken critic on behalf of the poor is to become the new leader of the Anglican Church of Tanzania. The Rt Rev Valentino Mokiwa will succeed Archbishop Donald Mtetemela at the end of May.

Bishop Mokiwa has been Bishop of Dar es Salaam since 2002. He has challenged the government on mining contracts with foreign companies that he said exploited ordinary people but supported a government campaign to crack down on sex tourism.

Archbishop Mtetemela, who has been in the post since 1998, has served two terms and cannot be elected for a third. He will continue to be Bishop of Ruaha, where CMS mission partners Andy and Susie Hart work, and chancellor of the new St John’s University in Dodoma, where Christine and Paul Salaman are mission partners.
